What to Expect on Test Day

On the day of your driving test, plan to arrive about 10 minutes early so you have time to park, meet your examiner, and get settled. You’ll need to bring your provisional licence — forgetting it means your test can’t go ahead.

Your practical test typically follows this structure:

-
An eyesight check, where you’ll read a number plate from about 20 metres away.
-
One “show me" and one "tell me” safety questions about your car.
-
Approximately 20 minutes of independent driving, where you’ll follow directions from a sat nav or road signs to reach a set destination.
-
Around 10-15 minutes of general driving, guided by the examiner.
-
During your 35 minutes of driving you'll perform your parking manoeuvre and possibly a controlled stop.

How to Prepare for Your Driving Test
Preparing properly for your driving test can make a significant difference to your confidence and overall performance. Make sure you’re comfortable driving independently, handling roundabouts and junctions, and responding safely to real traffic situations.
If you feel you need more structured preparation before test day, additional manual driving lessons can help refine your skills and address any weak areas.
For learners who already have a test booked and want focused preparation over a shorter period, an intensive driving course may be a suitable option.
And if nerves are your biggest concern, extra support through lessons for nervous drivers can help you build confidence before the big day.
